There has been much speculation recently around fluoride and the possible negative side effects to your health. Too much fluoride has been said to be bad for you, and as much of the water that we drink often contains quite a lot the stuff, how badly is it affecting us?
There has been arguments for years surrounding whether or not fluoride is bad for us, but recent studies shown that it is damaging to health. Very high levels of fluoride has shown to cause neurotoxicity in adults causing negative impacts of the brain, learning and memory.
Harvard School of Public Health and China Medical University in Shenyang combined 27 studies, and found strong evidence that fluoride negatively affects cognitive development in children. A similar study published in the Journal of Epidemiological & Community Health found a connection with fluoride and thyroid problems. Thyroid problems are closely related to depression and obesity.
The study stated “In many areas of the world, hypothyroidism is a major health concern and in addition to other factors — such as iodine deficiency—fluoride exposure should be considered as a contributing factor. The findings of the study raise particular concerns about the validity of community fluoridation as a safe public health measure.”
70% of United States water supplies are fluoridated, meaning the repercussions could be incredibly widespread. For years fluoride was touted as a tooth decay preventor, but there is no significant link that has been found through research.
Fluoride can also be detrimental to oral health, interfere with brain functions, cause damage to the pineal gland, affect thyroid function, damage bone and decrease overall health.
